Ready or Not Kindergarten, Here I Come!

Helpful tips to help prepare your child for kindergarten this summer

By Melanie Armstrong June 14, 2023

Preparing your child for kindergarten during the summer is a great way to ensure they have a smooth transition into their new educational environment while also minimizing learning loss from preschool or VPK. Here are some tips to help get your child ready for kindergarten:

1. Handwriting Skills- Every Kindergarten teacher would be thrilled if their students came into school knowing how to write their first and last name. Please make sure your child is practicing these skills daily throughout the summer. To keep them engaged try writing with chalk, using paint brushes dipped in water to write on the sidewalk, writing in the sand on the beach or even using shaving cream on the table. Make it FUN!

2. Develop Independent Skills: Encourage your child to become more independent by practicing skills such as dressing themselves, using the bathroom independently, and washing their hands. Having a picnic lunch and showing them how to open up their juice box or sandwich bag, as well as practicing tying their shoes, would also be great skills to work on this summer!

3. Promote Social Skills: Kindergarten involves interacting with many new people.  Organize play dates or enroll your child in summer programs or camps where they can interact with other children and develop social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and listening.

4. Read Together: Reading is an essential skill for Kindergarten as well as their entire educational career. Read books together with your child regularly, discussing the story, characters, and encouraging them to ask questions. Visit the local library and allow your child to choose books that interest them. A love for reading starts young and will create lifelong learners!

5. Encourage Fine Motor Skills: Kindergarten involves activities that require fine motor skills, such as writing, cutting, and coloring. Engage your child in activities that strengthen their hand muscles, such as drawing, playing with puzzles, building with blocks and even playing with Play-Doh.

6. Practice Letters and Numbers: Introduce your child to letters and numbers through fun and interactive activities.  As you drive around town this summer play a game of eye spy and choose different letters and numbers your child can identify on billboards, signs and buildings.

7. Establish a Routine: Create a consistent daily routine that includes regular wake-up and bedtimes, meal times, and designated play and learning times. A predictable routine helps children feel more secure and prepared for the structure of kindergarten.

8. Visit the School: If possible, visit the school before the Kindergarten year starts.  Many schools have a back to school “Meet the Teacher” night a few days before the beginning of the school year. Explore the campus together, visit the classroom, and familiarize your child with the surroundings. This can help alleviate any first day jitters. Some teachers allow you to bring in their school supplies that evening, but be sure to check with your school administration.

9. Foster a Love for Learning: Cultivate a positive attitude towards learning by making it enjoyable and exciting. Engage in educational activities that align with your child's interests, such as science experiments, art projects, or nature walks.

10. Build Listening and Following Directions Skills: Practice active listening skills with your child by giving them clear instructions and asking them to repeat or summarize what you said. Encourage them to follow multi-step instructions to enhance their ability to understand and follow directions.

11. Emotional Preparation: Talk to your child about starting kindergarten and address any concerns or fears they may have. Assure them that it's normal to feel a little nervous and that their teachers and friends will be there to help them with anything they need.

Remember, every child is unique, and they may progress at their own pace. Be patient, encouraging, and create a positive learning environment to help your child feel confident and ready for their Kindergarten journey. Have a great summer!!
