Specialized Care at North River Family Health Center

December 9, 2021

Sports Medicine Is Not Just for Athletes

“It’s for anyone who has an injury or pain and wants to feel better and engage in an active lifestyle,” says Sara Wemlinger, DO, of North River Family Health Center. “I like to try to help patients learn strategies to prevent injuries from happening in the first place.

“My patient-care philosophy overall is to try to help my patients become engaged in their own care, starting with nutritional and exercise advice for a healthy lifestyle, regardless of disability or fitness level.

“Same goes for sports medicine. If we start by giving our body an individualized foundation of regular exercise, healthy nutrients and adequate sleep, the body will often find a way to heal itself. However, I am always here for my patients when it doesn’t.”

Dr. Wemlinger’s sports medicine services include pre-participation and pre-exercise physicals and sports-related concussion management. Other specialized services include Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) to relieve tightness and restriction in the joints and muscles.  OMT involves the physician using techniques that include stretching, gentle pressure and resistance.  Additionally, Dr. Wemlinger provides ultrasound-guided injections and diagnostics for pain management and women's health, other than obstetrics.

Holistic Approach to Care and Vasectomy Services

As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Ryan Zaleski,DO, of North River FamilyHealth Center believes in a holistic approach to patientcare. “Mental and physical, everything is interconnected in holistic medicine,” he says. “It’s important to me that Iget to know my patient so that I can treat the whole person.”

A holistic approach is useful to vasectomy, one of the specialized services Dr. Zaleski provides. Patients considering the procedure have an entire pre-operative appointment dedicated to learning about the procedure. During this time, Dr. Zaleski completes a thorough patient history and an exam. The patient also receives all the pre- and post-procedure instructions and the follow-p information to learn about potential risks and complications of the procedure.

“This is also the time to counsel the patient to ensure they understand the permanency of a vasectomy, since reversal is not always successful,” says Dr. Zaleski. “If, during this appointment, we discover that this is not the right time for the patient to have a vasectomy I can make other family-planning recommendations, appropriate for the individual patient.”

Dr. Zaleski performs the no-scalpel vasectomy procedure (NSV). He also specializes in ultrasound-guided injections and diagnostics for pain management and contraceptive services for women.
